{Feature} Double Fox Studio – Cluj-Napoca, Romania

via Double Fox Studio

Here’s a fun fact about me: I’m addicted to Etsy. I used to spend way too much at all the pretty shops, but now I tend to “window shop,” if you will, and save things to my never-ending favorites. During one of these bouts of window shopping, I stumbled upon Double Fox Studio, and just had to reach out to its owners Orka and Flavia to see if they’d let me feature their amazing artwork/pottery/jewelry on From Dill To Dracula. Thankfully, they said yes!

Tell us about your shop and what you create, and why you do what you do.

We create sculptures, art dolls and jewelry pieces with drawing interventions. We have always loved to create and knew from a very early age that we want to make art. At first we both started with drawings on paper and Flavia went on with photography. We met in 2003 and made some common works : I made the drawings , Flavia took pictures and we’d combine a drawing with a photo into a surreal work. We couldn’t imagine our lives without being in this fascinosum, the process of continuous creation, in which we are the creators and eventually the works also create us. This experience deeply transforms the subject who has been involved in it. It’s like a never ending movie or one with so many endings in it.

What does your typical workday look like?

Well there is no such thing as typical work day because we love to go with the flow, there is no precision regarding time schedule. We start and do things depending on how we feel that day.

What makes your products unique?

We think the uniqueness lies in the drawing and shapes we create. The outcome has its own singularity due to the one who creates it. This applies to every artist. Every time it’s a world of its own rules, stories, personality and aesthetics built in the work of art by its first owner.

How long (on average) does it take for you to complete one piece?

It depends on the work. The claying process is the longest as we create our own clay formula. It might take around three weeks until we can finally draw on it.

What are some of your favorite pieces?

Our favorite pieces are the two dimensional dolls and the animal shaped sculptures.

Do you ever create something and keep it for yourself, opposed to putting it up for sale? To counter, how hard is it to part with your artwork?

In the beginning we found it hard to say good-bye to a piece we loved very much, as we do have preferences sometimes. But then we realized that letting go the one work we love so much is the greatest joy as this is like a recognition of beauty. Someone else saw its beauty, just as we did, and wants it. What else would you wish for as an artist? We create to be in the action of creation and then to share it with the world.

What’s your favorite part of Romania?

We love the nature, forests and mountains we have in our country. The painted monasteries area is a favorite, in Suceava and Gura Humorului and the Danube Delta for its nature.

Tell us something about Romania that most wouldn’t be familiar with.

Inside the old Turda Salt Mines (Salina Turda) located in Transylvania, stands the world’s largest salt mine museum.Originally established in the 17th century, the massive mines were formed completely by hand and machine rather than by using explosives. Visitors are invited to descend as far down as almost 400 feet into the Earth to witness the history of the trade.

Dracula: does he exist?

Hahaha ! Yes, he does. Even more now with all the media.

Do you have a favorite Romanian meal you’d like to share with the blog?

Yes, we do! It is called Zacusca. And it’s made of fresh baked or roasted vegetables. It is delicious on crust bread or even as a topping on rice for a quickie vegetarian meal This recipe is for a large batch intended for canning 9 10-12 jars ). You can cut it back if you want a smaller batch for immediate consumption.

Is there a place readers can get in touch with you online?

Yes, we do: Website, Etsy, Facebook.

I spent a lot of time browsing Orka and Flavia’s shop (more than I’d like to admit). But, there’s no harm in window shopping, right? And window shop I did!

My favorite piece has to be this Neon Cat Pendant Necklace:

I love it so much I thought about not including the link back to it, but that wouldn’t be fair to Orka and Flavia. Not only is it a cat (win #1) but it features the Romanian flag colors AND Romanian folklore (uh, isn’t that just perfect for From Dill To Dracula?)

I want it. I want to wear it with pride. And I want everyone to ask me about it so I can tell them about Double Fox Studio.

Here are some of my other favorites in their shop:

I’m a sucker for tribal.
Just LOVE this illustration
Because: yes.

Another huge thank you to Orka and Flavia for allowing me to interview and feature them!

What do you think?
Let me know in the comments!
