Ziua Agriculturii și a Vieții Rurale {Agriculture and Rural Life Day}

Romania, a land of breathtaking beauty, is so much more than its bustling cities. It’s a place where old-school traditions and the rural way of life still hold sway. On the second Sunday in October (today!), Romanians celebrate Ziua Agriculturii și a Vieții Rurale (pronounced zee-wah ahg-ree-kool-toor-ee shuh uh vee-eh-tsee roo-rah-leh), or Agriculture and Rural Life Day, a day the heart and soul of the nation’s countryside is honored.

All sorts of goodies are grown, from grains to fruits, veggies, and the fluffiest of sheep—all thanks to the hardworking farmers who make it happen. Agriculture and Rural Life Day is a way to say mulţumesc (that’s: thank you) to these unsung heroes who put food on tables and keep these rural traditions alive.

Life in Romania’s villages is like stepping into a postcard from the past, and on Agriculture and Rural Life Day, you get to dive right in! Here’s just a snapshot of the day’s activities:

Romania’s countryside is a treasure trove of handmade crafts. Craftsmen and women show off their skills in pottery, weaving, and woodworking. You might even leave with a handcrafted souvenir or two.

Romanian folk music and dance traditions are a blast! Local groups take center stage, and they’re not shy about inviting everyone to join in. Get ready to kick up your heels and twirl around.
